The Dragon King

▬ TYPE: Illustration

▬ CARD NAME The Dragon King

▬ SIZE: 1200 x 852

▬ BRIEF: You are an illustrator for a Chinese mythological trading card game, Legend of Gods. This is a card illustration. Your clients are letting you interpret this as long as it fits the brief below! (Think along the lines of Magic: the Gathering, Legend of the Cryptids, etc)

Location: The sea, or crystal palace

Action: Creating a flood, drought, storm, or any water-related natural disaster.

Description: The Dragon King (loosely based on Ao Guang) brings chaos to the world and creates water-related natural disasters (droughts, floods, etc). He resides in the East Sea, in a Crystal palace. Ao Guang has both a human form as well as dragon form (scaly serpent). He may even be depicted riding a dragon. He has a wife and five sons who fight alongside him, any of whom may or may not be depicted in your illustration.
More information here!

Mood: Chaos. “The world is my power!”

Design: (Loose influence/ideas) Chinese medieval armours (see here, here). Any dragon designs should be influenced by the serpent-like Chinese/Asian dragons. Think dynamic, powerful composition!

▬TEMPLATE: Your clients have provided you with a template! Please submit your illustration on the card in your final submission as well.

PNGPSD

▬REQUIREMENTS:
1. Studies and anything else relating to your illustration must be posted!
2. It’s an illustration, meaning there should be a fully realized composition with character(s) and environment developed.
3. The final illustration must be posted in the finals thread (TBA) along with your studies.

▬DEADLINE:
Tuesday, February 10th, midnight PST. (UTC -8hrs) in the finals thread.
Winners will be announced Monday night at 7pm PST!

▬WINNERS:
There will be a community vote as well as overall judging. Winners will be selected based on overall study output, improvement & work ethic, and how well the brief has been developed / communicated.

1st place - $10 in gumroad tutorials!
2nd place - $5 in gumroad tutorials!

Really glad I checked the challenges again you have a really cool detailed set up. It's good prep for real jobs
I was wondering since the first link for armor reference is Japanese and you say the references are loose influences can it be like general Eastern Asian fantasy armor or should it be specifically based on medieval Chinese armor ?

So far I've done some really crude thumbnails and did a study of a wave:

I really like that composition and the idea of him standing on a massive dragon head DivineCatbug! It feels like a massive movie scene to me

Looking good milch! it's smart to let the wave take up a lot of the composition since the water attack is the whole point of the card

Here's my progress so far. I did some little armor and Chinese dragon studies but i closed them without saving. Oops. Force of habit.
I'm still going to add water ball things in his hands i'm just waiting until the end.

I did a study of armor that had gold octopus tentacles and thought that was a cool idea for this because it's sea oriented but do you think that's distracting from the dragon theme?

Thanks milch! I definitely agree. i'm hoping that'll be solved when i add the water power stuff and water bits coming off of the wave. And i'll keep trying to find spots to desaturate too. Thanks for the helpful feedback!

Hey milch, I did a paintover to show you some things i was thinking.

MilchDragonPaintover.jpg
MilchDragonPaintover.jpg (348.53 KiB) Viewed 8446 times

Composition is the most important aspect of painting every time you make a mark you should consider how it's contributing to composition. Case and point: Craig Mullins. First i made the dragon king bigger since the card and challenge are called "the dragon king" he should be the main focus of the illustration ( and he'll need all the help he can get since the dragon is glowing and that's an inherent eye grabber). Then i made the wave wrap into the picture and used the lightning bolt to cut off its gesture so it doesn't lead the eye out of the picture. I liked the sleeve acting like a green light filter so i made it contribute to the composition by putting it higher up and fading out the color as it got closer to the bottom to which gave it direction. Then i added more green compositional marks on him like his collar, hair clip and buttons to make sure the eye has a reason to focus on him. It's always good to overlap stuff so i made the bits flowing off the dragon and wave foam going behind the dragon king. I made the whole thing darker to give the glowing parts of the dragon more effect and to make the rim light on the dragon king stand out more. I added very saturated hue jitters on the focal points (dragon king; dragon; wave). Contrast draws attention in so i made sure the dragon king had the most contrast in terms of value, hue, saturation.

There are other things i changed too but hopefully you can just spot the differences. I mainly just wanted to make the point that it helps to always think about the big picture. Even when you're doing small details it's just because you want that spot to stand out in the big picture.
Hope this helps! I know it's kind of weird to do a paintover of a wip but everything's so much easier to explain with a paintover, i think.

Okay time to work on my picture now
:)

OO: ohhh awesome caleb!! thank you so much! though now i'll feel bad for participating with mine when you helped me so much hehe

i was thinking the same thing about the composition, the shape of my wave was just kind of awkward... i didn't think about letting it overlap with the king though - that's a good idea (also the blueish foam on top looks nicer - i tried too hard to copy my reference)
i like what you did to the dragon, making it lighter and less distinct so it doesn't draw the attention too much (i agree on that one too :/) - also the water blobs are awesome, i had no idea how to do that :D
also the dark sky fits much nicer and making it only one lightning bolt is better for the composition...
i guess i'll push the highlights and details on the guy - i don't really like it with him bigger and with his head down though, i kind of think he looks a little more menacing in my version

No problem! The critique is a list of things i would change instead of a list of things you should fix is because most of what you had can work fine as long as you take efforts to have a hierarchy of focus. I put his head down because it flowed with the direction of the piece better (it's the same direction the dragon, wave, clouds and horizon line are going) but i liked him further away and looking up too.
I'm excited to see how you make it work!
