DhArt's Art Journey

Postby DhArt » Sun Jun 22, 2014 12:55 am

Hello folks. My name is Dennis, and I am here to become "less bad".

I have been drawing alone for a long time now whitout updating or having any real internet precense... I have now decided to start getting involved in the art communities again!

I mostly paint digital art nowdays. I got some experience with acrylics, oils and traditional medium, but I dont have a lot of time theese days (I work 45-50 hours every week on a non-art related job to support myself), so I tend to focus on the digital stuff

Here is some stuff I have done recently:

Studies from today:

A self portrait from life.

hey dude, instead of focusing on painting, you should really focus on drawing, since it's really your biggest weakness. I also see that you're not fully understanding the volume of what you draw, your paintings really lack of solidity, but you can work on that by drawing too !! anwyay, keep it up !

Thanks for coming to my sketchbook Kikindaface.

I didn't really understand what you meant with "focus on my drawing", because drawing IMO means so much. Do you mean anatomy, gestures or similar? Or should I just draw more overall?

Anyway, here's some stuff I did today. It's a horrible day today ... Had to run errands right after work (I work a night shift 7 days a week. No weekends off). Here's some traditional sketches I did from imagination in my car while I was waiting for the store to open. I didn't have access to a lot of pencils sadly, but theres some ink and markers in there. I also don't own a scanner, so theese iphone photos will have to do.

And here's some gestures from ref and imagination. Watched tutorials on figure drawing as usual. Will soon study anatomy more careful again.
Thats pretty much it today. Have to run off to my second job now ... Ugh! On a better note ... My copy of "How to Draw" by scott robertson should arrive in the mail tomorrow!

Hey DhArt I think what Kikindaface meant was to draw traditionaly. With pencil fro example. Dunno if this would help.

Another day, a few more updates ...

I will start doing some pencil studies too, but atm, I lack the material needed and I can't buy new ones before I get my salary. And even then, its a long way to the nearest art store from here ... (I live in a rural area).

Here's todays dumb shit:

Value study/self portrait. Strong lightsource from window.

Trying to apply it. Made a sketch of a girl from imagination. It's not fair that she calls the sun poorly drawn btw, because she is quite poorly drawn too!

Some sketches that I did on the bus in my "shitbook". Aka the sketchbook I use for drawing on the bus and when I got some time at work :P

And finally, rough design ideas for "Lizards of Legend" challenge, Including a rough thumbnail. I was thinking that it may be cool with some scary lizard mutant that go into the city at night to hunt ... After all, it could be a "urban legend" : P

Gesture, rhythm, line quality, proportions, textures, construction, design, anatomy, rendering . Here's what you can work with pencils. I'd suggest starting with proportions and gesture/rhythm, and with time, move on to construction/anatomy, and finishing with textures, design. line quality and rendering will improve along the way . Keep it up !

Thanks for the crits and advices guys. I will start doing pencil stuff once I got my new equipment (new pencils and a scanner).

Kinda slow day today. Read comics, watched movies and stuff ... Now I gotta run to work (worst day of the week, lots of stuff to do!) Will start with pencil studies once I buy new pencils and a scanner btw.

I like that last study, but the highlights are waaay too shiny for (non-wet) skin. There's no pure white in that reference photo, but you've used it on all the brighter spots of your study. Try to really match the value to what you see! :)

I like the portrait concepts in your first post. Dark futuristic universes are awesome. :D
I agree with what Kikindaface said. I think working on your drawing skills will improve the structure in your paintings.
Try to focus on construction and volumes as much as possible. :)

man, i have the feeling that you're really rushing when yiu're drawing (and maybe painting) . really, take the time to observe and understand, or when yiu're sketching, always work at the same pace, like for the adidas brand on the bag, it looks like nothing but yiu shoukd also take your time to get thos tiny details looking good, but only when the overall construction is working fine :-) it'll add believability to your drawing !

Postby DhArt » Thu Jun 26, 2014 11:23 pm

Thanks for the continuing crits Kikindaface. I wouldn't say that im rushing the important part such as construction for the bodies, but yeah, maybe I could take my time more on the final linework.
I will freely admit that im rushing the "shitbook" sketching tho. Thoose are usually made on the bus ride to work or on downtime at work, and Its either rushed or nothing there, because I don't got a lot of time.

6th day of daily updates. I didn't have a lot of time today. Had to clean my house and do a lot of choirs. I also started reading the books I recived in the mail today. Burne Hogarth - Dynamic light and shade and Scott robertson - How to Draw. I will study both a lot!
Anyways, a little art is better then no art I think ... Enjoy!

I can suggest to try doing different kinds of non-humanoid creatures from imagination. Or do mashups of basic forms (box, sphere, cylinder, cone, pyramid) with drawing though all forms and intersections.
It will be very hard at first, but it will help your brain to learn to operate with dimensional forms better.

Thanks for the suggestion pav327. Thats what im planning to do when I start studying Scott robertson soon. Just wanna finish of a couple of other books first.

Been sick for a few days. I suddenly got a really bad fever the other day and it completely knocked me out for a few days.
Anyway, getting back into the game again. Here's some stuff from today (the stuff I did while sick looks like total shit).
Studies and a value sketch ive started working on. Spent some time today with reading and watching tutorials in order to improve my value work. Gonna update it tomorrow.

Just finished this sketchpage. I failed most of thoose line exercises, so it's obvious that I need to work on it more. Also trying to learn Zbrush atm (actually gonna try and learn 3D modeling). This sculpt has really weird anatomy, so tomorrow, im just gonna start on a new one.
